Why is SMS Marketing so Powerful?

There are several reasons why SMS marketing is so powerful and it’s the culmination of these reasons that make it so appealing to businesses and organizations across the globe. Let’s look at some of biggest reasons.

  • It’s permission based. You can only send SMS marketing messages to customers that have opted in to hear what your business has to say. This makes your SMS marketing list extremely concentrated as it contains only people who are customers and plan on patronizing your business, usually on some sort of regular basis.
  • It’s a mass communication tool.Just about everyone has a cell phone today and it’s more than likely that all of those phones can receive text messages. SMS marketing allows you to touch all of subscribers with the click of a button.
  • It’s instant.Text messages are sent and received in a matter of seconds. Think about how powerful that is alone. SMS marketing allows you to control the exact time and date that your customers read your promotions.
  • It’s trackable. One of the awesome things about SMS marketing is that it allows you to easily measure what messages/promos are working and which ones aren’t. This not only allows you to be constantly improving your text campaigns but also helps you to improve your marketing messages across all other streams of marketing.

         Choosing a Keyword

There are several things to keep in mind when choosing your SMS marketing keyword but all in all it’s pretty simple. . Here are a handful of things to keep in mind when selecting a good keyword.

Keep it Easy to Remember.

The simpler the better. You want it to be something quick and easy that anyone can share with ease. It should be something people can see once and remember it so they can quickly type it into a text message and send it. Also because verbal request is a very important part of growing your SMS marketing list, it’s imperative that your keyword is easy to remember so your employees can quickly and easily let customers know how to join.

Don’t Be Too Clever.

Try and refrain from using keywords that might confuse people. Just because you get it doesn’t mean that others will too; especially your customers. It’s better to error on the side of simplicity to ensure you’re making it as easy as possible for people to subscribe to your list. Your keyword should also be a direct reflection of your businesses name of what it does. For example, if you own a ski shop called “The Loft”, some appropriate keywords might be “SKI” or “LOFT”.

Stay Away From Special Characters.

This one is pretty straight-forward. For example, if the name of your business is “Burgers at the Pier”, don’t reserve a keyword that’s something like “BURGER$” or “BURGER @ P!ER”. Again, the idea is to keep it as simple as possible. If your customers experience any frustrations in trying to sign up for your SMS marketing list, they may chose not to join at all.

Try and Keep it To One Word.

A question that you might have in the back of your head is “Can my keyword(s) be more than one word long”? The answer is yes. Although it slightly complicates the signup process for your customers, you can use 2 or more words. Referencing our previous example, what’s easier to remember and type into a text? “BOBS BURGERS” or “BURGERS”? Or better yet, just “BOBS”. The shorter the better. You’ll also be surprised at how many people will try to join your SMS marketing list by trying “BOBSBURGERS” without a space. Again, it just adds a small level of complication that is really not needed.
